If you’ve ever asked yourself, “What is the Bible?” you’re not alone.

Most people think the Bible is a single book.

But this isn’t the case!

The Bible actually consists of 66 books.

39 of those books comprise the Old Testament and the other 27 make up the New Testament.

Knowing this, it would be more accurate to call the Bible a collection of books.

The 66 books that comprise the Bible are of many different genres and they were technically authored by God.

However, God used man to write the text.

2 Timothy 3:16 says,

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,”

2 Timothy 3:16

The people who wrote the books that make up the Bible were inspired by God.

So What Is The Bible?

The simple answer to the question “What is the Bible?” is that the Bible is the holy text of the Christian faith.

As stated in 2 Timothy 3:16, we use it for teaching and training in righteousness.

The Bible teaches us many things such as: how the Earth was created, how humans were made, how sin first came to be, what our mission is as Christians, the gospel of Jesus Christ, and more.

Because the Bible has so many different writing styles and the books were written over a significantly long period of time, it is quite a complex text.

It’s recommended that you read and study the Bible daily.

It’s highly unlikely that you’ll be able to finish reading the entire Bible in one sitting much less comprehend the entire text.

Even the most seasoned believers stumble on what they read in the Bible.

Don’t be discouraged if you read a passage and you don’t understand!

To summarize, the Bible is a very unique, complex collection of books written by about 40 authors over the course of 1,500 years.

It is a book that was written by man but inspired by God.

The fact that God authored a book for us already makes it the most special piece of literature in existence.

Knowing what we know about the Bible, it should make anyone ecstatic to read it.

Sadly, that is not the case.

Looking at the graphic below, it’s clear that Americans don’t really read the Bible.

What Is The Bible? A Simple Answer 1

Although 9 out of 10 households own a Bible, this study conducted by LifeWay Research shows that 53% of Americans have read less than half of the Bible.

10% of Americans haven’t read any of it at all!

If you are reading this post, we at Gospel Gain encourage you to read the Bible.

If you don’t own a Bible, we’ve included resources below where you can purchase one.

And although we recommend owning a physical copy of the Bible (so that you can highlight or take notes), you can also get a Bible app on your smartphone or tablet.

Have a blessed day!
